It seems the power supply in the 5100 is failing as it needs pretty constant reboots now, but it was a great modem and I'm happy to stick with Surfboard for my next one. I bought this modem 6 years ago when I had problems with the Comcast rental unit - and their rental price. It has worked solidly and reliably for 5.75 of those 6 years and I am now replacing it with the 5101.
I had a Motorola modem previously, and it also died after a couple of years. I've had this modem for about 2 years, and it worked fine until about a month ago. I'm replacing it with a Linksys CM100. Perhaps my expectations are unrealistic, but I expect more than 2 years service from a modem. Now, at random times, it loses it's connection to the internet and must be rebooted to get it working again. This happens at least once a day.
Great product. This cable modem is a Work Horse, I've had it for sometime now and never a problem with it. It may be an older model but It is still Kickig out the Jams.
Shop around. If it doesn't, I have to do it again.maybe call my ISP on the phone. I get a lot of downtime when I should be online and productive. I don't know if it's my modem or my ISP.but for some reason my Internet connection keeps getting lost. I figure there must be something more reliable than this out there. Every now and then, however--sometimes for a day and sometimes for weeks--it loses its commnection. I've had this modem for about a year now and most of the time it does what it's supposed to do. Then I have to unplug it, reset it, plug it back in.see if it works.
Now I've switched it out I've had no problems connecting since. Like other reviwers stated, works fine for awhile then gradually gets worse and worse. After about 1 year mine had trouble connecting all the time.
